The howling cactus turned out to be a Coyote Pup in Pain yearning for help:
It is a universal truth or phenomenon for mums to be intuitive and instinctive about children’s safety. Be it animals or humans, all mothers take a close look at their babies unless they are satisfied with their self-dependence. Gwen Maxwell, a resident of Phoenix, Arizona heard a strange noise from the cactus in her backyard only to discover a Coyote pup howling in pain. She instantly called for help and the rescuers managed to rescue.
The 86-year-old Gwen Maxwell couldn’t sight the pup in pain wrapped in cactus. Jose Soto, a rescuer from Pebblebrook Golf Course and Shawn Bordine, Assistant superintendent came for help. The pup’s mouth and body were covered with cholla cactus.
On nearing the pup, Jose and Bordine were shocked to find the mother of the pup watching the two men trying to help. Usually, a mother wouldn’t want anyone to touch her baby but this time it was strange. The mother had the instinct that no harm was being done to her pup. It was evident that she wanted the men to get off the pain.
Gwen also managed to pull the painful cactus from his mouth. After the rescue, three of them examined if the pup was free from the pain and any infection. Soon after the pup was left, he ran to his mother who was eagerly waiting for the help. Until now, it was true of a mother’s protective nature but the intuitive nature gets revealed in the truest color through this story.
