Law Enforcers from Benicia Police Department Helping To Create Ripple Effects of Kindness As Police Officer Surprises Teen With Bike
Policemen in the United States are in a crisis point due to controversial shooting incidents that occurred in the past two years. The root cause of the problem is the alleged racially motivated killings of African American men. Eric Garner’s choke hold death in 2014 ignited a social media firestorm directed at New York City policemen after the city’s medical examiner made the pronouncements that Garner’s death was a homicide.
This tragic story is just the beginning, as similar happenings turned communities upside down from Louisiana to Texas. It is therefore a breath of fresh air to hear a different narrative, one that talks about a white police officer helping out a young black man.
This is the story of Police Officer Kirk Keffer performing a Good Samaritan deed for a 19-year old African American named Jourdan Duncan.
This is a tale involving two extraordinary people. Jourdan Duncan earned a High School diploma and he was eager to work doing menial tasks for Pro-Form Laboratories in Benicia, California. He needed to earn a living, while at the same time he needed a steady source of income so he can save up for his college education.
However, Duncan quickly realized that in order to make money he also needed to spend money, a resource that he did not have. He can’t afford to fix a broken car and there was no other way to cover the seven miles distance from home to work.
Jourdan had a perfect excuse to look for another job or to stay home at his parent’s house in Vallejo, California and do nothing. Nevertheless, he chose to report to work six days a week.
The impoverished teenager decided that he will walk two hours each way – a dangerous way to earn a living especially if the work day ends close to midnight. During one of his solitary walks from his workplace, Police Officer Keffer spotted him and thought that the young man was in trouble. The policeman approached Duncan with a desire to help, but the teenager was not thrilled to see a law enforcer in the middle of the night. It is easy to understand Duncan’s reaction in light of recent events.
Both men surprised each other, first with Keffer’s offer to drive Duncan home, and then with the explanation as to why the young man was forced to walk a distance longer than what marathon runners had to endure in a 12-mile race.
Keffer was stunned to hear the poverty-stricken story of a hard-working teenager. He was compelled to bring up the matter to his colleagues at the Benicia Police Department. Finally, he persuaded the members of the Benicia Police Officer’s Association that the best thing to do is to surprise Duncan and to inspire him with a brand new bike.
Keffer’s gracious deed created ripple effects of kindness as the proprietor of the bike store donated a brake light system and a helmet. Duncan was at a loss for words when he received a gift from law enforcers.
The heart-warming story was posted on Facebook and spread like wildfire, encouraging social media messages, such as, officer surprises teen with bike, surprise bike and other variations.
It is good to know that this inspiring tale of two great men is reverberating all over the World-Wide-Web. However, the story should challenge people, and make them realize that it does not really take much to change an ugly narrative into a tale of compassion and grace.
